In October 2008 the European Commission took the initiative to establish a European Cluster Policy Group (ECPG) with a mandate to advise the Commission and Member States on how to better support the development of more world-class clusters in the EU. Through an open call for applications, 20 high-level members with a diverse background and outstanding expertise were selected in March 2009 for a term of 18 months. The Group is chaired by Tea Petrin, former Minister of Economy in Slovenia and professor at the University of Ljubljana.

European Cluster Policy Group meets to discuss actions for excellent cluster policies and cluster organisations in Europe

The key to strengthening clusters in Europe lies in striving for excellence both at the level of cluster policies and at the level of cluster management. This was the issue discussed by the European Cluster Policy Group, which met for the third time in Brussels on 28-29 January 2010 to formulate policy recommendations to be addressed to the European Commission and EU Members States.

The European Cluster Policy Group met for the second time in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on 17 and 18 September 2009 to discuss the role of clusters in support of emerging industries and the different applicable policy measures. The meeting was hosted by the Faculty of Economics, University of Ljubljana, and by the State Secretary Darja Radic, Ministry of the Economy, Government of Slovenia.

European Cluster Policy Group appointed to advise on modern policy responses in support of more world-class clusters in the EU

The European Commission has adopted a Decision to set up a European Cluster Policy Group with the aim of exploring how to better assist Member States in supporting the emergence of more world-class clusters in the EU. The European Cluster Policy Group, the result of the European Commission Decision on 22 October 2008, will start its 18-month term in April 2009 .
