On occasion of the Belgian EU Presidency, the Federal Public Service Economy organizes a seminar entitled “From knowledge to competitiveness” to be held on September 14th at Wolubilis in Brussels (251 Paul Hymans Avenue - 1200 Woluwe-Saint-Lambert).

The purpose of this seminar is to present and discuss three tools developed by the federal public authority to support innovation as a factor of competitive and sustainable growth. The seminar will focus on standardization, intellectual property and public procurements.

8.45 – 9.30 : reception

9.30 – 09.45 : speech by the Belgian Minister of Economy “How can standards, intellectual property and public procurements boost European Entrepreneurs?” (tbc)

09.45 – 10.00 : opening speech by Antonio TAJANI, EU Commissioner for Industry, “Why standards, intellectual property and public procurements are important for the European research and innovation plan ?”

10.00 – 10.20: lecture by Paul Coebergh van den Braak – Vice-Chairman of the Internal Market Committee – Business Europe, “How can standardization strengthen competitiveness?”

10.20 – 10.50: coffee break

10.50 – 12.20 : panel: Standardization as driving force for competitiveness and innovation through:

  • a better bridge with research and innovation;
  • a better support for innovation management;
  • a better access for SME’s

14.00 – 14.20: lecture by Mr. Mike WEBER – Fraunhofer FOKUS, “How can public procurements strengthen competitiveness?”

14.30 – 16.00: parallel panels

  1. Intellectual property as driving force for competitiveness and innovation through:
    • - a better access for SME’s;
    • a better and more intensive use of IP assets for obtaining funding;
    • a better link with normalization;
    • a better enforcement.

  2. Public procurement as driving force for competitiveness and innovation through:
    • structural change (targets, risk sharing, support for public procurers …);
    • the promotion of good practices;
    • green public procurement.

16.30 – 17.00: Closing session & Press release – Points of interest of the presidents of the panels. The Belgian Presidency will table a document based on the points of interest in the group Competitiveness of the Council.
