Official launch of the CLUNET aerospace pilot project: European Aerospace Cluster Partnership (EACP)

in
Representatives from 24 European aerospace clusters and regions met on 6 May in Hamburg, Germany, to start a dialogue and jointly develop transnational cluster cooperation projects. With the growing competition in the worldwide aerospace industry and new market entrants such as Brazil, China, India, Japan and Russia, it has become essential for European aerospace clusters to jointly tap their innovative potential in order to successfully compete on a global level. The European Commission supports transnational collaboration between clusters such as under the Europe INNOVA initiative. Still, there is a need for a permanent exchange platform for work, qualification and scientific research for all players in the European aerospace industry.

Therefore, in the framework of the CLUNET project funded under the PRO INNO Europe® initiative, the Ministry of Economic and Labour Affairs of Hamburg and the Berlin Brandenburg Regional Development Agency have initiated the European Aerospace Cluster Partnership (EACP) in collaboration with two other CLUNET partners (North West Development Agency and Madrimasd). The EACP currently has 24 members from 11 European countries. It will be a long-term partnership of collaborating clusters for intensive mutual exchange, development and implementation of cooperation projects. At the same time, it is envisioned to become the key partner for the European Commission for topics such as aerospace cluster policy and industry-specific issues.

The official founding of the EACP took place on May 6, 2009 at Hamburg Airport. Delegates from 24 European aerospace clusters and regions as well as representatives of the Hamburg aviation companies were present to sign a Letter of Intent (LOI). Among the speakers were Carsten Frigge, State Secretary of the Ministry for Economic and Labour Affairs, Dr Christian Ketels from Michael E. Porter’s Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at the Harvard Business School, Prof. Dr. Joachim Szodruch from the German Aerospace Center and Dr Nikos Pantalos from the European Commission, responsible for the European Cluster Alliance (ECA). Three working groups were organised, 'Skills & Qualifications' led by Hamburg, 'Internationalisation' led by Aerospace Valley (Toulouse), and 'Funding' led by Aviation Valley (Rzeszow).

More information about the EACP is available here.
