Alain Tubiana is founder and managing director of iconoval, image cluster in Alsace since fall 2003 (87 members, 1600 employment, 130 M€ turnover).
He chairs etma (european television and new media management academy), first european business school dedicated to TV and new media management. At 50, Alain Tubiana worked 15 years as consultant in economic development strategies for territories and project management.
After studying public law and journalism, he started to work in 85 in politics as communication officer in a cabinet. Alastair Wilson
Alastair has been involved in UK photonics for over 35 years, operating in both the private and public sectors. Following a B.Sc in Physics and an M.Sc in Optoelectronics from Queen’s University, Belfast, he started his industry career in Barr and Stroud Ltd, subsequently Thales Optronics, as a laser physicist and held managerial positions in project management and marketing.
In 1989 he joined Scottish Enterprise, Scotland’s principal economic development agency, and was Head of Optoelectronics for several years. During this time he founded the Scottish Optoelectronics Association and was involved in establishing the Institute of Photonics at the University of Strathclyde. In 2001 he was appointed as Business Development Manager of Compound Semiconductor Technologies Global Ltd, a foundry for compound semiconductor devices and was a key figure in growing the company’s global customer base.
In December 2006, Alastair was appointed Director of the Photonics Knowledge Transfer Network. The Photonics Knowledge Transfer Network, sponsored by the Technology Strategy Board, is responsible for generating activities and initiatives that promote the exchange of knowledge and the stimulation of innovation in UK photonics. As of July 2010, Alastair became Director of Photonics for the Electronics, Sensors and Photonics Knowledge Transfer Network.
Alexander Bode
Dr. Alexander Bode is lecturer for management studies and management of enterprises and networks at Darmstadt University of Technology (Germany). He is also director of Hessenmetall Cluster-Initiative responsible for four networks in the metal industry in Germany. He studied industrial engineering and focused on international strategic management and mechanical engineering. Afterwards he spent 3 years as lecturer at DHL-Chair of Global Supply Chain Management at the Chinese German School for Postgraduate Studies at Tongji University Shanghai (China). He received his PhD from Darmstadt University of Technology. Working at chair of cluster & value chain management his research interests are in the fields of international business, clusters and network management.
Allan Mayo
Allan is Head of the UK’s Dept for Business Services Policy Unit. His team was responsible for the publication of the Government report on “Supporting Innovation in Services” in 2008 and, most recently in March 2010, for an interim report on “Professional and Business Services: A 2020 Vision for Growth”.
He is actively engaged in European policy networks, participating in the EPISIS project, a collaboration in policy development between Finland, Germany, Sweden, Denmark and the UK. Allan has also been invited to Chair a Panel of Experts to advise DG Enterprise on how services and service innovation can contribute to fulfilling the EU 2020 Strategy for smarter, sustainable and inclusive growth. It expects to report by the end of the year.
Andrea Moltrasio
Andrea Moltrasio is CEO of Icro Coatings S.p.A., a medium-size chemical enterprise located in the Bergamo area (Lombardy, Italy) and part of one of the most dynamic and innovative Europe’s chemical industry clusters. Mr Moltrasio is also active in the health sector, being Chairman and Managing Director of one of the oldest private hospitals in Italy, the Clinica Castelli S.p.A. In addition, he is in the Board of RCS MediaGroup (international multimedia publishing group), of UBI Banca (major Italian banking group), and President of BergamoScienza (international Science festival).
He founded and coordinated (2004-2007) the “Club of 15” - a consortium
that groups the 15 most industrialised provinces of Italy - and he also served as Vice President in the Executive Board of Confindustria (Confederation of Italian Industry) responsible for Europe (2006-2010) and as President of the Bergamo Province Industrial Association (2001-2005). Mr Moltrasio holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano and a Master of Business Administration from Santa Clara University (CA,USA).
Annie Renders
Annie Renders is coordinator of the Flemish innovation actors’ network for IWT, the Flemish Innovation Agency.
She studied Chemistry at the University of Leuven, and obtained a PhD in 1990. From 1990 till 2000, she worked at Solvay S.A. where she was Application Development Manager for the ‘Hydrogen Peroxide’ business unit.
In 2000, she joined IWT and is now coordinating the Flemish regional innovation actors’ network. As such, she has an overview of the current innovation support measures established in Flanders and is also looking at the interaction and internationalisation of these Flemish innovation support actors in the context of European Cluster activities.
As member of the Monitoring and Analysis service group of IWT, she has experience in monitoring and analysing results, effects and impact on project level, on programme level and on overall innovation policy.
She represents IWT in the CIP-Pro-Inno Europe project TACTICS “Transnational Alliance of Clusters Towards Improved Coordination Support”.
Arend Oetker
Stifterverband is the business community’s innovation agency for the German science system. Representing 3,000 companies, business associations and individuals, its sole source of funding is charitable giving. Since 1920, Stifterverband has acted as private industry’s joint initiative for supporting research and higher education.
The BDI is the umbrella organisation of German industry and industry-related service providers. It represents 36 industrial sector federations and speaks for more than 100,000 private enterprises employing around 8 million people. Membership is voluntary.
The Hero Group is an international food Group focused on branded retail business in baby-foods, fruit products, cereal bars and bakery and decorative products. Established in 1886 in Lenzburg, Switzerland, Hero’s operations are based predominantly in Europe, North America and Middle East/Africa. In 2009, the group generated revenues of $ 1.8 billion with approximately 4,000 employees in more than 30 countries.
Charlotte Ahlgren
Charlotte Ahlgren is the Executive Vice President of the Danish-Swedish cluster organization Medicon Valley Alliance where she currently is heading the Life Science Ambassador Programme.
Charlotte has 20 years experience from the private sector mainly in medical technology and ICT. She has a broad experience from different management positions in finances, marketing, business development and general management and she has been working both in Sweden, Denmark and Finland.
Since 2003 she has worked in triple helix oriented organisations. As the CEO of Medeon Science Park, Sweden she has been involved with issues such as innovation, tech transfer, start-ups and among other achievements she started Medeon’s incubation facility.
Charlotte has been a board member of several organisations working within innovation and growth such as SiSP (Swedish Incubators and Science Parks) a national industry organisation, IASP (International Association of Science Parks) an international industry organisation for science and technology parks, Connect, a non-profit organization to help accelerate the innovation economy, as well as being the chairman of the board at the Faculty of Health and society at Malmö University.
Christian H. M. Ketels
Dr. Christian Ketels is a member of the Harvard Business School faculty at the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness. He holds a PhD (Econ) from the London School of Economics and is an Honorary Professor at the European Business School (EBS).
Dr. Ketels is currently also a Senior Fellow at the Stockholm School of Economics and Director of TCI, the global network of cluster practitioners. He has led cluster and competitiveness projects in many countries and advised the World Bank, OECD, EU, NIB, UNIDO as well as a number of national governments.
Dr. Ketels serves in advisory boards to research institutions and government agencies in Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia, and is a member of the European Commission’s European Cluster Policy Group.
Christoph Beer
Christoph Beer is CEO and Partner from mundi consulting ag, Berne, Switzerland. mundi consulting ag exists for 20 years and is today a medium sized consulting company with the following main topics:

Before he worked 8 years in the field of knowledge and technology transfer, innovation management and cluster management at innoBE AG as member of the management team. He has over 20 years experience in the ICT-Sector and has worked on various positions. He has a technical background (electronics and informatics) with a post-graduate education in economics. He is also the cluster manager of the tcbe.ch - ICT Cluster Bern, Switzerland. tcbe.ch was founded 1996 and is embedded in the regional cluster politics. The cluster has about 200 members in the field of ICT. Christoph Beer is the Winner of the European Cluster Manager Award of the Year 2008 and head of the Global ICT Cluster Managers Group.
Denis Bortzmeyer
After engineering school (Ecole Polytechnique + Ecole des Mines de Paris) Denis Bortzmeyer got his PhD in continuum mechanics of ceramic materials. He worked ten years in research and development with the chemical group Rhône-Poulenc (ceramics, catalysts supports...) and during this time got his habilitation to supervise research (ceramic powder behaviour).
In 1998 he joined Atochem, now Arkema, where he performed various R&D management functions in inorganic chemistry.
Since 2005 he his Head of Partnerships in the R&D Direction of Arkema, supervising the company's major collaborative R&D programs.
Dominic Power
Dominic Power is Professor of Economic Geography at Uppsala University, Sweden. His research is concerned with regional and industrial competitiveness,
consumption, branding, labour markets, cluster and innovation dynamics. His chief empirical focus has been the workings of the cultural industries: in particular the music, design and fashion industries.
He has published over 60 articles, books, and reports on these topics and has lectured at major scientific and policy conferences around the world.

Emiliano Duch
Emiliano Duch is the President and Founder of the firm COMPETITIVENESS, an international consulting group, specialising in 'Building Competitive Business Clusters,' which he founded with the support of leading business leaders such as Michael Porter and Alessandro Benetton.
As CEO of COMPETITIVENESS, he has acted as an advisor to hundreds of clusters, providing them with strategic advice and specialised e-services through projects sponsored by local organisations and governments, as well as multilateral institutions such as the European Commission, IADB and the UN. The group has carried out more than 100 consultancy projects in competitiveness reinforcement, at cluster level in Europe, Asia and Latin America.
Emiliano is one of the founders and a former President of The Competitive Institute (TCI) and is still active in the Board of Advisors and in the on-going events of TCI. He is also the Director of the Barcelona Clusters Summer School, organised by the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics, in early July, every year. This is a programme that offers courses covering everything from the conceptual framework for clusters to best practice examples of cluster development policies and cluster strategy and management.
Emiliano has a Master of Arts in Public Administration from Harvard University, an also an MBA from the Harvard Business School. Originally, he was an architect from UPC in Barcelona.
Enzo Sisti
Enzo Sisti – Marketing and Investment manager at Veneto Nanotech Scpa
Borned in Padua in 1970, Enzo has a Phd in Philosopy and Theory of Science (University of Venice) and he attended to a Master of Finance at Ernst & Young Business school. He worked as marketing consultant in the international professional service organization Ernst & Young where he was involved in numerous projects concerning the marketing strategy of some large Italian corporations. Previously he worked in a financial institution which assist the enterprises to access to national and regional financial aid. He is actually marketing and investment manager of Veneto Nanotech, the Italian cluster of Nanotechnology and he is advisor of the regional venture capital fund Veneto Sviluppo. He is member of the Board of four nan technological startup.
Erik Bunis
Erik Bunis is the CEO of LänsTeknikCentrum AB (LTC). Länsteknikcentrum (LTC) was established in 1987 and coordinates and encourages cooperation between industry, trade, the universities and society as a whole for a well working regional innovation system. A special focus is put on supporting SMEs. LTC supports companies in their development through transfer of technology and business intelligence. Since the start-up LTC has facilitated a network of qualified resources from a wide range of organisations and institutes.
Erik Bunis has a technical background from both mechanical- and civil engineering and started his career as Research Engineer at Chalmers University of technology in Gothenburg. After that he worked with the industry as Marketing Manager of the Sapa-group. During the 1990s he had different roles in Almi, the Swedish Development Agency. Since 2000 he is in charge of LTC and in that position he has assumed the role of process manager of the regional innovation system ReFine. He is continuously supporting the establishment of different industrial clusters such as the cluster initiative "Kingdom of Aluminium", the Wood Product cluster and recently one of the members in the steering committees for GnoHow (polymer and screw-cutting cluster). Through the ACENET initiative, the Erik Network and the NOVAREGIO-project Mr. Bunis supports cross-border collaboration between European clusters and company networks.
François-Xavier Level
François-Xavier Level is a specialist in European affairs and regional policy with various responsibilities both in the public and the private sector. He recently spent four years as a government adviser to the Hungarian Prime Minister’s office where he was in charge of the implementation of a policy for competitive and development clusters.
Previously, as a consultant he carried out many interventions on behalf of the European Commission in Central Europe (Hungary, Slovakia, etc.) to implement regional development programmes and to create appropriate structures (Economic Agency for the City of Budapest, etc.).
He has also been Deputy Director of the Picardie Regional Council in charge of European Affairs and Cabinet Director of the President of the County Council for the "département" Hauts-de-Seine.
Frédéric Druck
Frédéric Druck (44) holds a Master in Communication from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Brussels, Belgium) where he began his career as Assistant. He developed his professional communication skills by occupying the last 15 years different positions managing Public Relations in various organizations including the global pharmaceutical company Merck Sharp & Dohme.
He was also at a time Head of Medical Practice at Interel, a Belgian Public Relations/Public Affairs agency. Since 2007, he is in charge of communication and international relations at BioWin, the Competitiveness Health Cluster of Wallonia (Belgium). BioWin is currently collaborating to 2 different European projects and is developing several partnerships with European, American and Chinese health clusters/organizations. BioWin is member of the Council of European BioRegions (CEBR) and of the European Regions Research and Innovation Network (ERRIN).
Fritz Pleitgen
Fritz Pleitgen was born on March 21, 1938. At first he worked as a newspaper journalist before joining Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) in 1963 as a reporter on the main news programme of the ARD. In 1970 he was appointed ARD correspondent in Moscow.
He was made head of the ARD-Studio in East Berlin in 1977, before he took over the responsibility for the ARD-Studio in Washington in 1982. He held this post for five years and then moved on to become the head of the ARD-Studio in New York. In 1988 he returned to the WDR headquarters in Cologne to become Editor-in-Chief of WDR television. He was appointed Radio Director of WDR in 1994 and its Director General in 1995 (until 2007). In 2002 he was appointed Vice-President of the European Broadcasting Union, before serving as its President from 2006 to 2008.
Fritz Pleitgen is currently the President of Ruhr 2010 Ltd., which is responsible for organising the events in the European Capital of Culture in the Ruhr Metropolitan Area in 2010.
Gabor Lemak
Gabor Lemak graduated excellent at the Budapest University of Economic Science. From 1999 to 2004 he was an economic researcher at GKI Economic Research Co., which is the most traditional and highly respected macroeconomic research company in Hungary. He did primary research in the following areas: M&A, Venture Capital business models and regulation, Risk Management and co-operated with the "Big Four" like Ernst&Young and PricewaterhouseCoopers. From 2004 to 2007 he was the head of a consulting department at GKI's subsidiary and co-operated with leading Hungarian and multinational information technology companies. In 2007 he was employed as a director by GKI Consulting Ltd. and was the strategic advisor of Hungarian Telecom Plc, the market leading telecom company in Hungary. From the end of 2007 he has been the director of the Mobility and Multimedia Cluster, which is the biggest and one of the most successful clusters in Hungary.

George Glaglis
George Giaglis is Associate Professor of eBusiness at the Athens University of Economics and Business, Athens, Greece. His main research interests lie in the areas of mobile and wireless applications and services; ubiquitous and pervasive information systems; business process modelling and simulation; and information systems evaluation.
He has published more than 120 articles in leading journals and international conferences, including the Information Systems Journal, the International Journal of Electronic Commerce, and the International Journal of Information Management. He has authored or edited 12 books and research volumes. He is a member of the editorial board of seven journals, including the International Journal of Mobile Communications and the Business Process Management Journal.
Since 2001, he is the Director of the ISTLab Wireless Research Center, a group pursuing research on mobile business and ubiquitous commerce.
Gerd Meier zu Köcker
Dr. Gerd Meier zu Köcker made his PhD in Material Science in 1995 and joined VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH in 1999. Since 2007 is acts as Director of the Agency Competence Networks Germany, on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi), which supports the best German regional networks and clusters in Germany. In the same year he also became Director of the Institue for Innovation and Technology, Berlin.
Besides of his scientific work in technical and socio-economic areas, he is deeply involved in various projects dealing with clusters, competitiveness and innovation policy issues world-wide. Organisational cluster excellence based on cluster benchmarking, the management of clusters as well as international cluster policy matters are some of his main scopes of work since many years.
From 2007 – 2008 he was active Member of the High Level Advisory to the EC and contributed to the European Cluster Memorandum. In 2009 he joined European Cluster Policy Group. He is also member of various international Advisory Boards (European Cluster Obeservatory, TACTICS, REG X, PRO INNO PARTNERING Council or the French Network Euro-Mediterranean Innovation.
Gerlinde Pöchhacker - Tröscher
Gerlinde Pöchhacker-Tröscher, 43, is managing director of PÖCHHACKER Innovation Consulting GmbH (P-IC), a consulting firm specialized in R&D, technology and innovation, founded in 2008. The clients of P-IC are public bodies like advising councils, ministries, regional governments and agencies as well as research institutions and industry associations.
Before, she was managing director of the Upper Austrian innovation agency TMG and responsible for research, innovation and clusters. In 2006 she initiated the EU project “CEE Cluster Network”.
From 1998 to 2005 she built up the Upper Austrian cluster initiatives in the fields of automotive, drive-technology, plastics, furniture and timber construction, health technology, mechatronics, human resources, environmental technology, logistics and design & media.
Gernot Klotz
Gernot Klotz is the Executive Director for Research and Innovation at the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic). He coordinates and steers the innovation-related activities of the organisation: technology development, innovation policies, societal acceptance of new technologies and products, emerging science/policy issues and the Cefic Long-range Research Initiative (LRI). He is also a Board member of the EU Technology Platform for Sustainable Chemistry and in charge of innovation.
Gernot Klotz currently sits in various advisory and steering committees at OECD, WHO and EU Commission level in areas such as innovation, technology development, impact on environment and health. He is a Sherpa in the newly formed European Commission’s High Level Group on key enabling technologies.
Göran Lindqvist
Göran Lindqvist, PhD, is Principal Associate at the Center for Strategy and Competitiveness (CSC), at the Stockholm School of Economics. His research focuses on agglomeration, clusters and cluster policy. Hannu Vornamo
Hannu Vornamo is Secretary General of the Helsinki Chemicals Forum. Previously he worked for the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland as Director General. He is member of the Board at several organisations such as EKOKEM OY AB, the Finnish Employers’ Management Development Institute FEMDI and Economic Information Office, University of Helsinki - Faculty of Chemistry.
Harald Bleier
Harald Bleier has more than 20 years professional experience in the development of plastic injection moulding machines, last as head of the R&D department with BATTENFELD Kunststoffmaschinen GmbH, an enterprise with address in Lower Austria, acting world-wide. He is mentioned as inventor in more than 50 national, European, USA and PCT patents. From 2002 to 2005 he was involved in the establishment of the regional polymer processing companies’ network "Kunststoffnetzwerk Ost”, a nucleus of the Plastics Cluster in Lower Austria. Since 2005 he has been managing the Lower Austrian branch of the Plastics Cluster, a cross regional cluster initiative of 3 Austrian regions with about 400 member companies. Since 2010 he is also in charge of managing the Mechatronics Cluster in Lower Austria. Harald Bleier and his team of 4 project managers initiate collaborative projects of SMEs, coordinate national and international research projects, introduced and coordinate the Lower Austrian bio plastics initiative “N Packt’s” and many more.
Helmut Kergel
Helmut Kergel graduated from the Technical University of Berlin in 1986 (Diplom-Ingenieur) in precision engineering. He then worked as a R&D engineer for production technology of thin-film sensors in a SME for several years before joining VDI/VDE-IT as consultant in the department of electronics packaging technology. Since 1998 he was head of the group “Productronic – Industrial Technology Engineering” and later deputy head of the department “Technology”.
Today he is deputy head of the department “International Technology Cooperation and Cluster”. Besides being involved in the management, coordination and evaluation of collaborative R&D projects on the EU level, he was/is responsible for a number of international projects with/in Brazil, France, Namibia in particular. Mr. Kergel as well is carrying out several internationalisation and benchmarking activities for innovation networks in the context of the German “Initiative Kompetenznetze”, and is coordinating specific tasks of cluster related EU-wide projects.
Irina Blomqvist
Ms. Blomqvist has her roots in the creative sector with her first BA in Textile Design and BA in Visual and Media Arts (Media Production) at Tampere Polytechnic, Finland. She also has an MA in Interactive Media from the Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland in 2001.
In 2002 and 2003 Irina continued to participate in industry events. In
summer 2003 she brought her experience back to her native
country and joined her present employer Culminatum Innovation Ltd where she holds the position of Business Director in the Coordination of Finnish Digital Content Competence Cluster. From September 2003 to December 2006 she acted as Program Director for the Centre of Expertise for Digital Media, Content Production and Learning Services. Since 2005 she has also acted as a Vice President for the MindTrek association.
Irina acts as the editor-in-chief for the www.digibusiness.fi and www.digibusiness.eu portals. She is engaged in several national and international development projects and organisations in the area of digital content, competence and innovation management and knowledge creation and transfer. During year 2007 she also established an European DIGIBUSINESS Think Tank activity.
Jan Annerstedt
Prof. Jan Annerstedt of Copenhagen Business School is a specialist in business strategy and public policy. His research puts focus on management of technical change and innovation, incl. innovative product design, high-tech entrepreneurship, business venturing and the creation of intellectual capital and other intangible assets in business firms.
Jan Annerstedt has recently contributed to studies of space technology applications and satellite-enabled services. As councilor to the International Association of Science Parks and as senior advisor to the Bearing Group (UK), he works on industrial and other innovation in global, regional and local economic contexts. As entrepreneur, he has co-founded and managed business firms, R&D centers and several institutions of higher learning.
Jean Severijns
Jean Severijns deals with cross border activities and internationalisation in general and with regional innovation policy in particular. He works for the
Regional Government of the province of Limburg in the Netherlands as Project manager Internationalisation. Jean. Severijns has more than 20 years of experience in policy-making, matching business and governmental interests on strategic, tactical and operational level. In this way he combines theory with practical experiences and he was involved in more than 25 Regional Innovation Strategies in Europe..
He graduated with distinction (“Cum Laude”) as an economist at Tilburg University in the Netherlands and worked during 6 years in the Rotterdam area for the “Rijnmond public authority”. After that, he was active all over Europe.as well as Russia, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil

Jean-Luc Beylat

Prior to his current position, Jean-Luc was Vice President, Strategic Cooperative R&D Programs- responsible for the coordination of cooperative and strategic R&D programs of Alcatel-Lucent. Jean-Luc joined Alcatel in 1984, and spent 7 years working on semiconductor lasers at Alcatel’s research center in Marcoussis, France. In 1992, he launched Alcatel’s WDM transmission activities and also managed a research group on optical amplification. In 1996, he was appointed Director of the Optical Systems & Networks Department in Alcatel’s research center driving worldwide research activities in terrestrial and submarine transmission. In 2000, he was appointed program director of the Alcatel’s Optics Groups and later, Vice president of network solutions of the Alcatel’s Optical Networking activities. In his last position, he was a key contributor of the optical product line evolution in regards to cost optimization and data content, helping Alcatel to maintain a #1 position in optical networking since 2001. In November 2005, he has joined the Alcatel CTO office to develop partnership in R&D. He is also member of the Research Integration Team created after the merge between Alcatel and Lucent.
Dr.Jean-Luc Beylat holds a Ph.D. in semiconductor lasers and their applications from “l’Université Pierre et Marie Curie” (France). He has authored or co-authored over 50 technical articles and has been responsible for the filing of 15 patents.
Jenny Clucas
Jenny is currently chief executive of 150 - member strong Chemicals Northwest and leads a small team in supporting and promoting the regional chemical industry in the NW of England. She attained a first class chemistry degree at Liverpool University and went on to complete her PhD in the same subject. Her career started as a chemist at Laporte Chemicals before joining Solvay Interox as R & D Group Manager. In 1995 Jenny joined Wentworth Consultants as a management consultant and ultimately a director, working with a diverse range of companies on leadership, teamwork and communication, before taking up her current post in 2007. Since this time at Chemicals Northwest Jenny has worked tirelessly on behalf of the private sector in such areas as securing funding from the public sector to improve the efficiency of chemical companies. She has facilitated networking and the sharing of best practice between companies and overseen the general communication, dissemination of information and events while working closely with partners such as universities, service providers and research institutes. She is also on the board of the National Skills Academy for the Process Industries and a Trustee of Catalyst Science and Discovery Centre.
John Hodgson
John Hodgson is a consultant with Critical I Limited. He is involved in assessing technology transfer activities including the development of new structures for technology transfer, and in writing business plans to enable companies to raise capital. Critical I is known for providing data and analysis of the biotechnology industry in Europe and the USA to government and industry bodies in Europe, Australia, and elsewhere as well as to the European Commission. In a personal capacity, John has been an advisor to the UK Parliamentary Industry Committee in its investigation of the UK biotechnology industry.
He is also a life sciences writer, formerly European Editor and now Editor-at-Large of Nature Biotechnology. He is involved more widely as an advisor with the Nature organisation, most recently and specifically as Chair of the Nature SciCafe, a networking forum for academic researchers and investors.
José Santos
Professor José Santos started an academic career in engineering in the early seventies, but soon after moved into the managerial world. Twenty years later, José decided to retire from an intense and successful executive career after he held for ten years the position of MD of an Italian multinational group. In 1995 he moved from Italy to INSEAD and devoted himself again to scholarly work.
His research and teaching focus on the management of the multinational enterprise, particularly on the management of global integration and global innovation. José is Professor of Practice in Global Management (Affiliated) at INSEAD, France; Visiting Scholar at MIT Sloan, USA; and “Professor Catedrático Convidado” at UCP, Portugal. He regularly presents in conferences around the world and works with top management teams of multinational corporations from Europe, Americas, and Japan.
Juha Miettinen
Mr. Juha Miettinen is responsible for national Ubiquitous Computing Cluster Programme in Finland. Ubiquitous Computing Cluster Programme in Finland is a part of the national Finnish Centre of Expertise Programme. The national objective of the Centre of Expertise Programme is to create a long-term strategy for the full utilisation of the top-level expertise in the regions. The vision of the Ubiquitous Computing Cluster is that by the end of the programme season in 2013, Finland will be the know-how leader in the development, commercialization and capitalisation of embedded intelligence in human-centered, distributed, mobile and constructed environments.
Mr. Miettinen is also COO of Hermia Ltd. Hermia is one of the leading innovation and development companies in Finland. He has 15 years of experience in various project management positions in the business development circles regionally, nationally and internationally. Before joining Hermia, Mr.Miettinen has worked for over ten years in different financing and ICT-companies. Mr. Miettinen holds a M.Sc. in Economics (minoring computer science) from University of Tampere, Finland and University of Oregon, US. He is preparing his PhD-work at Tampere University of Technology on topic “Industrial Clusters as Strategic Development Tools”.
Karen Maex
Dr. Maex obtained her PhD in Electrical Engineering at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. Having started her academic career as a Research Assistant (1982-1987) she became Research Director (1987), Assistant Professor at K.U. Leuven (1989), then Professor (1998) and finally Full Professor (2003).
Between 2002-2005 she was a Member of K.U. Leuven's Research Council and Founder-Coordinator of the Erasmus Mundus Programme on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. In 2005 she was appointed Vice-Rector for Science, Engineering and Technology at K.U. Leuven. Meanwhile at IMEC (Interuniversity Microelectronics Center), of which she is a fellow since 2001, she was Strategic Research Adviser for the Division on Semiconductor Process and Device Technology (2001-2005) and Programme Director of the IMEC Industrial Affiliate Programme (IIAP) on Nanotechnology (2004-2005).
Dr. Maex is currently Vice-Rector for Science, Engineering and Technology and a full Professor at K.U. Leuven, where she is also responsible for human resources and diversity policy.
Karin Jaanson
Ms Karin Jaanson is Deputy Mayor of City of Tartu since 2005. Previously she worked for the University of Tartu as head of the research and development department. She has a background in economics at the Tallin Technical University and a master of public administration at the University of Georgia in the USA. Lars Horsholt Jensen

Lars H. Jensen is currently cluster manager for the initiative BrainsBusiness - ICT North Denmark, which aims to promote and develop the ICT Cluster in the region of North Denmark. The cluster organization has 110 ICT companies as members and also includes university research and support from local and regional government. He has a track record in regional and local strategy development, cluster initiatives and project management.
Lars has previously worked as a project manager within different European funding programmes e.g. the Framework Programmes, Interreg, LIFE, and Leonardo da Vinci.
He holds a M.sc. in Public Administration from Aalborg University.
Leo Van de Loock
Leo Van de Loock (° Antwerp on 15 November 1960) is currently director of Business projects at IWT Flanders.
After studying Master of Engineering (construction) at the University of Gent, he obtained a PhD in construction engineering at the Catholic University of Leuven in 1989. Additional, Mr Van de Loock obtained an MBA at Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School in 1996.
He joined IWONL (former Belgian Innovation Agency) in 1989. In 1991 , with the start of IWT, the Flemish Innovation Agency, he became programme director. Since 1998 he is a member of the management committee of IWT.

Lucia Seel
Lucia Seel, Clusterland Upper Austria
Lucia Seel joined Clusterland Upper Austria in 2004 and is EU projects coordinator. She gathered experience in the management of European funded projects like Interreg IIIC ( as coordinator of the Innofire project and partner in the CLOE project, FP6– INNO net CEE ClusterNetwork (partner), CIP: Europe INNOVA – partner in the European Cluster Observatory project and PRO INNO Europe – The European Cluster Excellence Initiative. She is also responsible for the international delegations visiting Clusterland and for the management of the Upper Austrian Cluster Academy. Currently she coordinates the setting up of the European Cluster Collaboration Platform. Before Clusterland, she got extensive international experience in her position as export area manager for South-East Asia and part of Europe at a multinational company producing high end consumer goods. She also worked in the communication business (with Saatchi&Saatchi in Romania). She holds a university degree in economical cybernetics & statistical mathematics from the University of Economic Studies in Bucharest, Romania. She attended university courses on international marketing and management at the University in Linz, Austria. She is fluent in 5 languages: English, German, French, Italian and Romanian (mother tongue).
Maciej Dzierzanowski
Maciej Dzierżanowski is the Head of the Enterprise and Innovation Research Area at the Gdańsk Institute for Market Economics in Poland – one of the Polish think-tanks active in research and public policy recommendations.
Mr. Dzierżanowski has been involved in the research, policy advice and implementation projects, particularly in the field of innovation systems, innovation policy, clusters and technology transfer, as well as venture capital, corporate governance and capital market regulation. Co-author of recommendations for both national and regional cluster policies in Poland (the recommended cluster policy was adopted for implementation in the Pomerania region in September 2008) and involved also in piloting several cluster initiatives in the Pomerania region.
He was also involved in the proceedings of the Northern Cluster Alliance, which considered development of trans-national cooperation and development of Baltic clusters. In 2009-2010 member of the European Cluster Policy Group.
Marc Pattinson
Marc Pattinson is Managing Director of inno TSD based in Sophia Antipolis in France which specializes in the development and management of regional development and innovation strategies. He studied in the UK at the London School of Economics where he obtained a Masters in economics and urban and regional planning. He is currently responsible for the Secretariat services and animation team of the European Cluster Alliance. This work is undertaken as part of the TACTICS INNO-Net project funded by DG Enterprise Industry. The ECA Secretariat activities include the preparation of cluster policy workshops, testing and launching transnational cluster cooperation initiatives and helping SMEs participate in cluster collaboration projects.
Marc previously worked as part of the INNO Learning Platform team and between 2008-10 he worked alongside a number of cluster oriented INNO nets such as INNET, CLUNET, BSR and CEE.
Marcus Andersson
Marcus Andersson is the Director of Research and Business Development at Tendensor AB (formerly Geobrands), regarded as the leading place-branding consultancy in Sweden.
Tendensor’s focus is on how clusters, cities, regions and countries actively can differentiate and improve their image. Over the last few years, Tendensor has successfully managed a range of place-branding projects and organised a range of training courses for place managers in Northern Europe.
Marcus also functions as Head of Public Affairs at the Baltic Development Forum, where he is working on “BaltMet Promo”, a project aiming to galvanize regional stakeholders into promoting the Baltic Sea Region on global scale. He has previously worked for the Swedish Government in policy areas such as innovation, entrepreneurship and security policy and done in-service training at the European Commission’s Innovation Policy Development Unit.
He has conducted research on nation branding and been published in various international journals. His study on “Ambassador networks and place branding” (co-authored with Per Ekman) published in the Journal of Place Management and Development was chosen as a Highly Commended Award Winner at the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2010. He is a member of the expert group of the Association of Place Branding and Public Diplomacy and has an MSc in Business and Economics and an MA in Political Science.
His areas of expertise include brand building for supranational and cross-border regions, cluster branding, nation branding and public diplomacy, public-private partnerships in place branding, innovation policy and public and EU affairs.
Mario Calderini
Mario Calderini holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Manchester and a MSc in Engineering from Politecnico di Torino. He is Full Professor of Strategy and Innovation Management at Politecnico di Torino where he is also Deputy Director of the Doctoral School. Mario Calderini sits in the board of directors of the Italian National Agency for Innovation and from 2005 to July 2010 he was the President of Finpiemonte, the regional development agency of Piemonte Region, managing a 300 million euro yearly budget.
He is now senior advisor to the Regional Ministry for Research and innovation. He is also a member of the European Patent Office Academy Advisory Board. Mario Calderini’s main academic interest is in the economics and management of innovation.
His numerous publications in highly ranked international journals cover several topics: technology and innovation policies, empirical studies on the determinants of innovative activity, technology and knowledge transfer, the strategic management of intellectual property rights and finance for innovation.
Mateja Dermastia
Mateja Dermastia, director of Anteja ECG, is an international expert in innovation and competitiveness policies and programs. She has nearly 20 years of professional experience in the area of enterprise competitiveness, competitiveness policies and long-term managerial experience in leading public and private institutions. She has served in various capacities as including State Undersecretary for Competitiveness and Innovation at Ministry of Economy in Slovenia.
She has served on various international expert committees and groups on competitiveness, clustering, and innovation policies. Ms. Dermastia is recognized for her extensive advice to governments in developed and developing countries. In addition, she has helped to build expert teams and provide managerial guidance on issues related to industrial development and innovation.
Originally trained in biochemistry, Ms. Dermastia has a Masters in Economic Sciences and has obtained executive education at the Harvard Kennedy School. She has written
extensive on clusters, competitiveness and innovation.
Mats Williams
Mats Williams is president of The Paper Province, a cluster organisation for the pulp and paper industry in the Swedish region of Värmland and its surroundings. Under Mats William’s leadership The Paper Province has developed from a small project comprising seven members into one of Europe’s most innovative clusters – according to European Cluster Observatory – with more than 90 member companies.
Through a clear communication and marketing strategy focused on PR, Mats William has managed to make The Paper Province known as the good example on positive cluster effects, recognised by regional and national public actors as well as the global pulp and paper industry. In 2009 Mats Williams was awarded Opinion Maker of the Year by the Swedish forest industry. Mats Williams has frequently been invited to speak at national and international conferences on how clusters can contribute to innovation and growth for businesses and regions.
Micael Gustafsson
Micael Gustafsson is the managing director of Øresund IT, the cluster organization that organizes the ICT-cluster in the cross boarder region between the greater Copenhagen and southern part of Sweden.
He has a very strong industry background and has started several companies of his own. Micael has been active in different types of industry from the automotive industry to knowledge based consultancy firms. Acting as a CEO and in other types of management roles, he has long experience of how to coach employees in both large and small organizations.
His main competence lies within sales, marketing and management. During his time in Øresund IT he has focused on how increase the number of innovations in the cluster that gets closer to commercialization. He has started several projects in order to find new ways to commercialize research and also tried to involve users in the innovation process.
Nathalie Stephenne
Nathalie Stephenne obtained a degree in Geography followed by a Master degree in Development Studies from the University of Louvain-la-Neuve (UCL), Belgium. In the private I-mage consult company, she had an experience in database management and mapping on an EU project. She presented her PhD thesis untitled dynamic simulation model to understand land-use change processes in the Sudano-sahelian region (SALU – Sahelian Land Use) in 2002, supervised by Pr E. Lambin.
Laureate of ARSOM in 2000, this foundation published her PhD thesis in 2003. In collaboration with the CEH Wallingford, UK, the integration of SALU results in GCM simulations estimated the impact of these changes on climate. She joined the IGEAT, University of Brussels, on a Belgian Science Policy funded and user-oriented project that compared classical and object-oriented classifications of very-high-resolution satellite imagery.
Engaged at the JRC, Italy, IPSC in 2005 with a post-doctoral research position, she has been involved in the JRC institutional research activity related to modelling of EU Border Permeability and EU Neighbourhood Stability. She is currently project manager in WALPHOT, Belgium.
Nicholas Széchényi
Nicholas Széchényi graduated in France as an IT engineer. He then worked thirteen years at managerial level in international trade for the consumer electronics industry in Asia, USA and Europe.
In 2002, he changed his field of activity and managed ERFI, whose purpose is to promote European regional experiments in the strategic management of innovation.
In 2006 he participated in setting-up Europa InterCluster, a European platform for cluster cooperation. He is now it’s Managing Director.
Nick Storer
Nick has considerable experience in the environmental technologies and the services sector. He joined Envirolink Northwest in 2003 after nine years working as an environmental consultant with Enviros (previously March Consulting). Whilst at Enviros, he specialised in advising businesses on process efficiency, waste minimisation, environmental management, waste management and developing markets for recycled wastes.
Nick graduated from Leeds University with a chemical engineering degree and started his career in research and development with Johnson Matthey. He worked on diverse technologies such as car exhaust catalysts, fuel cells and high temperature plasma catalyst recycling before moving on to join Procter & Gamble in Manchester, to manage an industrial chemicals manufacturing plant. He has also worked as a hazardous waste management engineer for a number of companies, including SRM (previously Solrec) in Morecambe, and as a contract process engineer on pharmaceutical and medical waste treatment plant designs.
Patrizia Toia
Patrizia Toia was born in Pogliano Milanese (Milano); Graduated in Political Sciences at Università degli Studi di Milano, Milan, she took her Master Degree in Strategic Planning at Bocconi University. She was a manager Planning Office in the regional government of Lombardia. She was member of the Regional Council of Lombardia, where she was appointed in several committees: she has been Councillor of the Coordination and social Services, Councillor of Health, Councillor of Budget. Then she was elected at the Chamber of Deputies and to the Senate of the Republic, as a representative of the Ulivo. She was appointed to several institutional offices: Undersecretary of the Ministers for foreign affaires with a proxy for Relationships with the UN, and Cultural Relationships abroad, for Latin America, Asia and Oceania, for Immigration and Italians abroad. She was nominated Minister of the European Community Issues and then for the Relationship with the Parliament.
Since 2004 she is Member of the European Parliament elected with Uniti nell'Ulivo coalition and she is member of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists & Democrats (S&D). She is Vice-chairwoman of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and substitute Member of the Committee on Development.
Pavla Bruskova
With a rich background in industry restructuring, regional development and SMEs support, Pavla Bruskova has been involved in the cluster concept implementation in the Czech Republic since its beginning in 2002. She gave rise to the first Czech cluster organisation in the engineering sector in March 2003; took part in the preparation of the National Cluster Strategy and Cluster Guide; carried out mapping, feasibility studies and facilitation of wood, IT, hydrogen technologies, automotive and tourism cluster organisations.
In 2006, she founded the ClusterNet regional initiative and was managing it while in the position of the CEO of the Regional Development Agency Ostrava up to June 2010. She took part in a number of European cluster projects and mentoring activities. She established the National Cluster Association in the Czech Republic and became its first president in March 2010.
She is a member of the Advisory Board of the European Cluster Observatory and The Competitiveness Institute.

Ms Pirjo Kutinlahti is currently Ministerial Adviser at the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy (MEE), Innovation Department (Division for Innovation Environment). She was appointed to the Ministry in August, 2006.
At the Ministry, she is responsible for leading the National Centre of Expertise Programme (2007-2013), designing policies related to innovation environments and regional innovation activities. In 2009, she was responsible for coordination of International Evaluation of Finnish Innovation System (1.8.2008–30-10.2009). In 2009-2010 she has been the Finnish representative in the preparation of the Flagship Programme for Innovation and Clusters under the EU’s Strategy for Baltic Sea Region.
Rene Tõnnisson
Rene Tõnnisson is working as member of executive board of Baltic Innovation Agency. He is also member of European Cluster Policy Group (ECPG) advising European Commission on future European cluster policy. He has gained significant experience in innovation management and cluster development. He has been previously working as member of executive boards of Tartu Science Park, Tartu Biotechnology Park, Institute of Baltic Studies and Connect Estonia. He has been responsible for wide range of cluster, innovation, technology and business related activities.
He has been manager of Estonian mCluster, a cluster initiative in mobile and location based services, he was the founding member of European cluster regions network Cluster Linked over Europe (CLOE). As the project Coordinator for Estonian Innovation Relay Centre (IRC) he was member of IRC Cluster Working Group and Cluster Expert Group for Innovating Regions in Europe (IRE). Rene Tõnnisson holds a Master degree in Public Administration and Policy from University of Tartu, Estonia and Certificat d’Etudes Politiques from Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Strasbourg (Sciences Po), Université de Robert Schuman, France.
He has also been studying at University of Cambridge and European University Institute.
Reza Zadeh
Reza Zadeh specialises in regional and economic development through innovation systems and is the founding director of Zinnovas Europe, an interim management and consulting firm. For the past 15 years he has led on formulation, implementation and evaluation of regional competitiveness and innovation strategies. He held the portfolio for regional policies on science and innovation as well as sector & cluster development in South Wales and later in Yorkshire and Humber in the UK and frequently acts as an expert / advisor to the European Commission and other governmental bodies on cluster policy and regional innovation.
Prior to joining the public sector, he held a number of international management roles in telecommunications, aerospace and management consultancy, working in various countries including People’s Republic of China, Singapore, United States, France, Belgium and the former East Germany, as well as extensively in the United Kingdom.
Simone Hagenauer
Simone Hagenauer holds a master degree in Law from Karl-Franzens University Graz/Austria and specialised in European common law and environmental law. Since 2003 project manager at ecoplus, the Lower Austrian business agency, she has been responsible for international business cooperation projects as well as international cluster development projects. Key areas: Cross-border and trans-national cooperation and networks (ETC, FP6 CSA, CIP Pro Inno), cluster policy, international cluster co-operation and cluster manager skills. As a member of the CEE-ClusterNetwork Management Team, a strategic European project for joint cluster development in Central and Eastern Europe, she was in charge of the development of a Joint Action Plan and a Paneuropean survey on cluster manager tasks, skills and qualification needs. Currently she is involved in the European Cluster Excellence Initiative. Simone Hagenauer is a member of the global cluster network TCI and the European Cluster Alliance.
Solveig Fjeldheim
Solveig Fjeldheim works as an adviser in The Norwegian Ministry of Trade and Industry, Department of Research and Innovation. She deals with tasks related to public policy instruments for innovation, including development of new, as well as monitoring existing, instruments. She is among other things, responsible for the Department`s ongoing Cluster Project, that will form a contribution to the Ministry’s future Cluster Policy.
Furthermore, she is responsible for the corporate governance of the state owned company Innovation Norway. Fjeldheim holds a Master’s degree in Economics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. She has also studied entrepreneurship at Boston University, and has worked as an intern at an American start-up company.
Sven Gunnar Edlund
During 2004-2009 Sven Gunnar Edlund was Director and Head of the Innovation Actors Division at VINNOVA, The Swedish Agency for Innovation Systems. Edlunds responsibility has been to support the development of internationally competitive research and innovation environments in Sweden, internationally competitive clusters, commercialization of research and growth in SMEs. The design of the cluster program VINNVÄXT was done under Edlunds leadership.
Sven Gunnar Edlund is today working as Senior Advisor within VINNOVA. One of Edlunds responsibilities is to be one of the coordinators of Priority area 7, Research and Innovation, within the Baltic Sea Strategy Action plan. As Senior Advisor Edlund also supports VINNOVA in its leadership of the Flagship project on Research and Innovation, Transnational Clusters and SME networks within The Baltic Sea Strategy Action plan.
Edlund, being a physicist from The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, has
had a long career in research and innovation at The Swedish Pulp and Paper Research Institute in Stockholm, including, during 15 years (1979 -1994), holding the position as Director of Research and Head of the Physics Division.
Werner Pamminger
Werner Pamminger, Managing Director, Clusterland Oberösterreich GmbH
Werner Pamminger is an experienced executive and senior consultant for a few years. After a couple of years in industry as an engineer, Werner is since 2006 the general manager of Clusterland Upper Austria Ltd. the Upper Austrian regional development agency for cluster and network management, responsible for 40 employees and an annual budget of about 5 mil €. Werner is an international expert in cluster management and in the plastics industry, he has established the Upper Austrian Plastics Cluster since 1999 (a plastic industrial network of about 400 contributing companies). His main competences are situated in the fields of general management, project management, institutional development, workshop trainings and moderation. Werner has both a science (M.Sc. in automation engineering, University of Applied Science, Wels) and a business administration (M.B.A. University of Toronto) university degree, various training and education in organisational development and lived in the United States for 1 year. Werner lives with his wife and son in Upper Austria.
Zeljko Erkapic
Zeljko Erkapic is currently holding the position of CEO in Agricultural Equipment Cluster Ltd. This cluster project was initiated within Croatian Employer's Association by founding National Centre for Clusters in the beginning of 2007 which included another 4 cluster initiatives apart from Agricultural Equipment Cluster. Working on that project in structuring and organizing the cluster almost for two and half years, Agricultural Equipment Cluster separated from National Centre for Clusters in July 2009 and formally was registered as Limited Liability Company. Before coming to current position, in his career Zeljko worked in several distinguished firms mainly as CEO or commercial manager. His prior education is primarily focused on economics as he graduated the Foreign Trade Faculty at Zagreb University. He also has a great deal of experience in export and import businesses. In recent years, and after 20 years of experience in the field of economy, he graduated at the postgraduate program of Entrepreneurship at University of J.J. Strossmayer in Osijek. Zeljko is also active in a scientific project ‘Gaining economic prosperity by strengthening regional competitiveness’ started by Faculty of Economics in Osijek. He coauthored several scientific studies at the same faculty. Since summer 2009, Zeljko has actively participated as a lecturer at Public Relations and Media Studies Graduate School ‘Kairos’ in Zagreb teaching introductory program called ‘Entrepreneurship Basics’.
Zita Zombori
Dr Zita Zombori is working now at the Chemical Works of Gedeon Richter Plc. The company is the largest domestic drug manufacturer. Its main activity is the manufacturing and distribution of active ingredients and generic pharmaceuticals. Richter has now grown into a multinational company of Central and Eastern European Region. Dr Zombori is responsible for the European Affairs.
Until July 15, 2010 Dr Zita Zombori headed the Hungarian Pole Program Office in Budapest, which was the main coordination body of the Pole Program. Tasks of the office included the preparation of various proposal calls in the program, the overall management of the call for proposals for accrediting clusters and intermediation between public bodies and business actors.
Dr Zombori is a member of the TACTICS Reflection Group, which is a new INNO-Net project. The objective of the Reflection Group is to assist the TACTICS’ partners to analyse, develop and propose new cluster policy actions and methods of implementation in a number of predefined topics such as channelling RDI funding through excellent clusters or user-driven excellent clusters, among others.
Before joining the Pole Program Office Dr Zombori held various positions in the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, the National Development Agency and at an intermediary body for Structural Funds resources. Her duties included drafting the conditions for implementing the JEREMIE initiative in Hungary and participation in the elaboration of the New Hungary Development Plan (NSRF of Hungary, 2007-2013) among others.
